Rocky Mount's Bethel Heroes Chapter was organized October 23, 1902 and named for those Confederates who so bravely fought at the Battle of Bethel, many of whom - including Henry Lawson Wyatt, the first Confederate casualty - were from the Rocky Mount area. The eighteen charter members elected Mrs. Sallie Bunn Thorpe, the wife of Capt. J. H. Thorpe - a Bethel Hero, as their first chapter president. Over 100 years later, our chapter is still flourishing and has been continually active since its inception.

The Bethel Heroes Chapter is part of the North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. In addition to participating in Division (state) and General (national) goals, our chapter has its own projects which include a scholarship fund and a monument fund. The Alma Thigpen Scholarship Fund was begun to honor a deceased member who gave years of service to area youth as a dedicated teacher. The Confederate Monument Fund was begun to restore and preserve the Rocky Mount Confederate Monument for current and future generations. Our chapter is a non-profit organization and encourages and appreciates tax-exempt donations being made to either of these worthwhile causes.
